Millennium Wood

Millennium Wood

 Countryside & Open Spaces

A beautiful natural woodland offering a peaceful escape into nature, as well as a Nature Trail and Art Adventure for younger explorers.

History of Mowshurst and Millennium Wood

Within this Green Belt setting, Edenbridge Town Council owns a series of connected fields, crossed by two public footpaths. Here you will find Nomads Football Club, which is accessed off Four Ems Road via a rough-surfaced car park. Once part of Great Mowshurst Farm, the area was transformed in 1997 when the Town Council set out to create something special beyond the football pitches. The project began with the restoration of a large pond, followed by the creation of scenic pathways winding through the five-acre site. The final stage saw the planting of around 2,000 young trees, primarily native to the Weald, described as “a lasting gift from one millennium to another.”

Today, the woodland has grown into a rich and thriving habitat for wildlife and native plants. Bluebells and primroses now spread from the old coppice into the newer woodland areas, and species such as a locally scarce moss and the native common spotted orchid have taken root in the open hedge spaces. Overhead, green and great spotted woodpeckers are regular visitors, along with sparrow hawks and kestrels. On the ground, dragonflies, frogs, toads, grass snakes, and slow-worms all call this woodland home.

Award-winning

Millennium Wood continues to be recognised for its natural beauty and biodiversity, receiving a Silver Award at the South and South East in Bloom Awards 2024. The Town Council also been awarded £25,600 (distributed over six-years) from the Football Foundation to support the maintenance and improvement of its two football pitches at Mowshurst.
